Domestic Violence:
Domestic violence is widely prevalent but under- reported. There is also a high number of teenage pregnancies, many of which are the result of rape, abuse and incest.
2012: police records showed that there were 5 assaults on females each month.
2018: 13.7% of women aged between 15 and 49 reported that they had been subject to physical/ sexual violence by a current or former intimate partner in the previous 12 months.
2021: Cook Islands Women’s Counselling Centre states that they are having an influx of perpetrators coming forward for therapy. Over the last four years, the non- profit had helped 140 people but for the first time the number of women seeking help dropped from 28 in 2020 to 9 in 2021. 15 men seeked help in 2021.
Current Law and Policy:
The Cook Islands government noted in their report to the CEDAW Committee in 2007 that domestic violence is a problem.
