Research has shown that gender equality within the security sector is crucial in achieving long-term, durable peace and conflict prevention. However, despite this, only 1 in 5 NATO Council representatives are women as well as only 11% of commanders within the UN peacekeeping operations. As is the case in many fields, women are greatly underrepresented within EU institutions when it comes to decision-making which is especially detrimental when considering the fact that conflict and insecurity impact men and women in incredibly different ways. The EIGE calls for immediate measures to be taken in increasing gender balance within the sector.
